The 2005/06 season was a mixed bag for Real Madrid, as the club struggled to find consistency throughout the campaign. Under the leadership of manager Wanderley Luxemburgo, Real Madrid finished the season in second place in La Liga, six points behind champions Barcelona.
Real Madrid started the season strongly, winning their first four league matches. However, the team's form dipped in the following weeks, with a number of disappointing draws and losses. The team's inconsistent performances led to Luxemburgo being replaced by Juan Ramon Lopez Caro in December 2005.
Despite the change in management, Real Madrid continued to struggle for consistency in the second half of the season. The team's performances were often reliant on the individual brilliance of star players such as Ronaldo, Raul, and Robinho. Ronaldo was the team's top scorer for the season, with 14 goals in 20 league appearances.
Real Madrid's season was not without its highlights, however. The team reached the knockout stages of the Champions League, where they were knocked out by Arsenal in the round of 16. The team also reached the final of the Copa del Rey, where they were defeated by Barcelona.
In addition to Ronaldo, Raul and Robinho were key players for Real Madrid during the 2005/06 season. Raul, who had been with the club since 1994, continued to be a reliable source of goals and leadership for the team. Robinho, who had joined Real Madrid from Santos in 2005, was one of the most exciting young talents in world football at the time, and provided moments of magic with his dribbling and creativity.
Other notable players in the Real Madrid squad during the 2005/06 season included goalkeeper Iker Casillas, defenders Sergio Ramos and Roberto Carlos, and midfielders Zinedine Zidane and Guti.
While the 2005/06 season was not one of Real Madrid's most successful campaigns, the team continued to showcase some of the best talent in world football, and laid the groundwork for future success under managers such as Fabio Capello and Jose Mourinho.
