The Real Madrid season of 2004/05 was one of highs and lows, with some standout individual performances but ultimately a lackluster team performance. Led by coach Jose Antonio Camacho at the start of the season, the team began with two convincing wins in La Liga. However, their form quickly declined, leading to Camacho's resignation after just four matches. He was replaced by Mariano Garcia Remon.
Real Madrid finished the season in second place in La Liga, four points behind Barcelona. They won 22 of their 38 league matches, drew nine, and lost seven, scoring a total of 67 goals and conceding 35. While this was a respectable result, it was below the high expectations of Real Madrid fans and management, and there were several disappointing losses throughout the season.
In the UEFA Champions League, Real Madrid made it to the round of 16, where they were eliminated by Italian giants Juventus. The team also failed to win the Copa del Rey, losing to Real Betis in the quarter-finals.
Despite the team's struggles, there were several standout individual performances from Real Madrid's key players. Striker Ronaldo had a strong campaign, scoring 24 goals in all competitions, including 21 in La Liga. Midfielder Zinedine Zidane also impressed, providing crucial assists and scoring important goals throughout the season. He scored the winning goal in the Champions League final against Bayer Leverkusen with a stunning volley.
Other key players included goalkeeper Iker Casillas, who made several important saves throughout the season and helped Real Madrid reach the round of 16 in the Champions League. Sergio Ramos, a young player at the time, played in 28 league matches and scored three goals, showing his potential as a versatile defender.
Despite the individual performances of these and other players, Real Madrid's 2004/05 season fell short of expectations. However, the team would go on to achieve great success in the years to come, with many of these players playing instrumental roles in future victories.
